New Allies

We are very pleased to report that we are well into the process of forming an alliance with two people with an extraordinary and effective impact in fighting the forces threatening our most fundamental rights to live healthy lives. They are the most important lobbyists in the United States in the natural health field. Both are highly respected on both sides of the isle in Congress and have a deep commitment to this cause. We are proud to form an alliance with these two individuals.

Our Request

This is entirely new and critical venture for Hippocrates will impact all of us. We are privileged to have identified these very talented and hard working individuals to carry the battle forward in Congress and beyond. While no one is getting rich with this work, it does take significant financial resources to make it a reality. We need your immediate financial support to make it happen over the next year. This is a major task and we need your help. Hippocrates is deeply grateful for whatever you can contribute. Please make out contributions to Codex Fund c/o Hippocrates Wellness, 1443 Palmdale Court, West Palm Beach, FL 33411. It is our privilege to introduce you to these individuals.

Beth Clay is a name familiar to many in the health freedom movement. Building her career on the concepts of integrity, compassion, hard work, and determination, she has given over a dozen years to public service in Washington. Ms. Clay played a powerful and key role in representing the citizens’ interest in areas such as alternative medicine (including alternative cancer research and treatment), pediatrics, medical injury, FDA regulation, conflicts of interest, health care disparities, disease prevention, integrative medicine and more.

From 1998 to 2003, Ms. Clay served as a Professional Staff member on the Committee on Government Reform with Chairman Dan Burton and subsequently a Senior Professional Staff Member on the Subcommittee on Human Rights and Wellness. The Government Reform Committee is the largest committee in Congress with the broadest oversight reach across government agencies. Working with Chairman Burton, Ms. Clay coordinated 29 Congressional hearings, many of which had an emphasis on the importance of dietary, lifestyle and alternative approaches to healing. She led the investigation that uncovered the epidemic rise in autism rates and the very real possibility that environmental influences —including vaccine injury, heavy metal exposure, and chemicals exposures— are related to the recent dramatic rise in the United States. The rates jumped from 1 in 10,000 children around 1950 with autism spectrum disorder to 1 in 70 boys by the age of 8 years, newly announced this month. Since entering the private sector, Ms. Clay has been working tirelessly to promote health freedom and to protect DSHEA. This year, Ms. Clay lobbied for, and through her unique efforts won, priceless statements (11/18/09) from Chairman Tom Harkin and Senator Orrin Hatch in the markup of the potentially dangerous FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009. These statements are worth millions in the future of the Dietary Supplement and Herbal Industries of America.

As long as Chairman Harkin and Senator Hatch are alive and in office, these statements will help protect DSHEA from Codex. The statements were recorded and will be published to make their intent clear.

The Intent of Congress to the FDA and the Courts

Senator Hatch’s statement said in part:

“…when we update our current food safety system, we must protect current laws that have solid consumer protections. One of the laws that comes to mind is the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA).”

“…like you, Mr. Chairman, I too have recently heard from some of my constituents that they are concerned that standards adopted by the United Nation’s Codex Alimentarius Commission will restrict their ability to purchase dietary supplement products in this country, so I echo your statements and look forward to working with you and the other sponsors of the bill to make it absolutely clear that access to dietary supplements is governed by laws established by Congress, including DSHEA, and not by Codex standards.”

Beth won an impossible victory. None of this success in protecting DSHEA from the Codex forces would have been possible without Beth Clay’s leadership and hard work. Beth is now a Senior Vice President with Capitol Strategy Consultants.

Clinton Miller is a remarkable individual who has tirelessly worked in representing all of our most fundamental health interests for over 50 years. Brian Clement has a relationship with Clinton that goes back over 30 years – when Clinton worked to stop a major attack on alternative medicine by defeating the Quackery Act.

Clinton Miller is currently the Health Freedom Lobbyist for the Health Freedom Fund. From 1962 to 1989, he served the National Health Federation (NHF) as Lobbyist, Vice President and Executive Director.

Clinton is the father of the Informed Consent Amendment of 1962. Congress enacted the amendment he proposed, which required scientists performing medical experiments on humans to get their informed consent. Until then medical experiments were being performed on tens of thousands without their knowledge or consent. He authored and successfully lobbied unanimous enactment of The Proxmire Vitamin Bill of 1976. It prevented the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from putting most high potency vitamins on prescription as urged by the American Medical Association.

As Chairman of the Utah Anti-Fluoridation Committee, he helped keep Utah the least fluoridated state in America for more than 60 years. As Chairman of the National Anti-Fluoridation Committee, he helped kill all national compulsory Fluoridation Bills in the 1960’s.

He works closely with Beth Clay as they collaborate to optimize their strategies to win these complex battles.

Our Plan for Going Forward

We have defined several major areas which Beth and Clinton will focus on over the next year:

  1. Much work needs to be done to preserve the very recent victory won in protecting DSHEA from Codex forces. One part of the work is to create a deeper level of support in Congress so other individuals will step up when Senators Harkin and Hatch leave their posts. There are powerful forces in
  2. Congress and the FDA who desperately want to kill DSHEA.
  3. Major work needs to be done immediately in the area of preserving the rights of small organic farmers as well as organic standards. This includes opposing the efforts to make radiation mandatory as well as adding pesticides to organic foods under the guise of “food safety.”
  4. Congress needs to become aware of the threat of GMOs to our health. Efforts to oppose GMOs and create labeling requirements are critical.
  5. Efforts will be mounted to create a new and broad public awareness of these issues. You can hunt through the mainstream media and find virtually no mention of these critical issues. We plan a major effort in this area. This will include focused contacts with media, and enrolling activists and well known people to assist in these initiatives.
  6. Travel to CODEX meetings periodically in Europe so we can better monitor what we can expect to deal with in the future.
  7. Coordinate the efforts of volunteers to assist in creating public awareness.
  8. Hippocrates will coordinate all these new initiatives with Brian Clement and David Korkosz (HorizonPartners.net) acting as overseers of the strategy and the work.
  9. Brief Background on Codex

Codex, formally Codex Alimentarius (Latin for food code) is a rapidly moving legal and political movement driven primarily by US and global Big Pharma people. Under the guise of creating worldwide standards for our “well being,” it is geared to severely limit our health freedoms, affecting many things we consume, like food, nutrients, supplements, etc. Few people are aware of Codex and its impact, as it has been a stealth-like and low-key campaign. Some pieces of this program have been cleverly tacked-on to important pending legislation having little to do with Codex.

Positions Codex is subtly pushing for now or in the future. Some have already been adopted in other countries:

    1. Some foods may be irradiated and also have “select” pesticides added.
    2. Worldwide implementation of unlabeled GMOs into some crops, animals, fish and trees.
    3. Unreasonable “standards” and one time registration costs for small organic farmers that could negatively impact or drive some out of business.
    4. The maximum allowable levels of some nutrients (e.g., CoQ10, Vitamins A, B, C, D, Zinc and Magnesium) that have positive health impact on the body could be controlled under Codex and be reduced to amounts with potentially negligible impact on human health. At some point, they may only be available with a doctor’s prescription.
    5. Animals used for food may be treated with potent antibiotics and exogenous growth hormones.
    6. Some advice on nutrition, including written online or journal articles, could become illegal. This includes NaturalNews.com type reports on vitamins and minerals and alternative nutritionists’ consultations.
    7. Mandatory use of growth hormones and antibiotics on some food herds, fish and flocks. Some dairy cows may be treated with Monsanto’s recombinant bovine growth hormone.
    8. The reintroduction of some of the deadliest and most carcinogenic pesticides banned worldwide in 1991 by 176 countries, including the US. Seven of the 12 worst-ranked by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pesticides, like DDT, Hexachlorobenzene, Toxaphene and Aldrin, may be allowed back into the food supply at elevated levels.
