Journal of American Medicine reports an eight year study of 1419 cases of type 2 diabetics examined the relationship between self-reported physical activity and development of new cases of type 2 Diabetes. Compared with women who were consistently sedentary during this eighth-year period, women who were consistently active had a 41% reduction in risk for type 2 Diabetes. Women who were originally sedentary but then became active had a 29% reduction in risk.

These finding confirm that, when it comes to exercise, more is better. Nevertheless, there are many people for whom walking is as vigorous an activity as they can perform, and even this mild activity offers significant protection against type 2 diabetes.
