Lipoic Acid has many different properties associated with it. It is often times used as an antioxidant and help to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
Lipoic Acid is considered among the elite, multipurpose antioxidants. Known as thioctic acid, lipoic acid is fat-soluble and slightly water-soluble. This property has made it a perfect electron transporter for both oxidized ascorbic acid (water-soluble) and vitamin E (fat-soluble). Lipoic Acid also contains two thiol (sulfur) groups which allow it to reduce oxidized glutathione. The supplemental use of lipoic acid will have huge impacts on health in the population over the next ten years. Almost any portion of the body can use increased levels of lipoic acid, and no known toxicity is known to exist except in diabetic patients. Diabetic patients should have blood sugar monitored if lipoic acid is to be taken as it is known to improve sugar metabolism and may change insulin needs.
