• Peppermint, spearmint, any kind of mint will do

• Lemongrass

If you can find any one of these living plants in the wild you can juice the leaves and rub the juice on your skin or simply grab a bunch of leaves and rub them hard between your palms to make a juicy pulp and rub the pulp on your skin. You can also use essential oils derived from any one of these plants. The Hippocrates store carries a product called 'Bugs Be Gone' that is a safe and effective defense against mosquitoes.

You can also grow any one of these plants at home. All of these plants can be grown indoors or outdoors in a sunny location. You can plant in pots and position them near entrances to your home and any common mosquito entry points, such as open windows. For indoor protection, grow multiple potted plants and rotate your inside plants to the outside on a bi-weekly basis. While inside, place your plants in a bright location, preferably a southern-facing window or in a sun-room. Move all of these plants indoors for the winter in cold climate zones.
